Background of the Study

Agricultural value chain development is integral to enhancing food security and stimulating rural economies, particularly in regions like Ilorin East. Adult literacy programs have been progressively tailored to meet the unique needs of individuals engaged in agriculture by integrating modules that address both basic literacy and specialized skills necessary for modern agricultural practices. These programs aim to equip participants with the knowledge to improve crop management, engage in value addition, and access modern market information (Martinez, 2023). In Ilorin East, where agriculture remains a predominant occupation, such educational interventions are vital. They provide farmers with the skills to better understand market trends, adopt innovative agricultural techniques, and manage post-harvest processes effectively (Nguyen, 2024). The integration of literacy and technical agricultural education has shown promising potential for enhancing the entire value chain—from production to distribution. Adult literacy programs in the area also emphasize the importance of communication, record keeping, and financial management, which are critical components in optimizing agricultural productivity. As technology becomes increasingly embedded in farming practices, digital literacy is also gaining prominence in these programs, enabling farmers to access real-time data, weather forecasts, and market prices (Martinez, 2023; Oduro, 2025). Furthermore, the cultural and socio-economic context of Ilorin East underscores the need for a holistic educational approach that not only imparts basic literacy but also fosters entrepreneurial skills and value chain innovation. This dual approach is essential in bridging the gap between traditional farming practices and modern agribusiness. The adult literacy programs serve as a conduit for the dissemination of best practices and innovative techniques that can transform local agriculture. The continuous professional development of farmers through these programs is expected to contribute significantly to value chain development, thereby boosting overall economic growth in the region.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential benefits, the integration of adult literacy programs with agricultural value chain development faces significant challenges in Ilorin East. Many participants have limited exposure to modern agricultural practices and digital technologies, which hinders their ability to fully benefit from the literacy programs. Additionally, the curriculum is often not adequately tailored to address the specific challenges of agricultural value chain management, such as post-harvest losses, market fluctuations, and supply chain inefficiencies (Martinez, 2023). Farmers frequently encounter difficulties in understanding and applying technical concepts introduced during the programs, resulting in a gap between knowledge acquisition and practical implementation. Furthermore, infrastructural constraints, such as limited access to digital devices and internet connectivity, impede the effective integration of modern agritech solutions into traditional farming practices (Nguyen, 2024). These challenges contribute to suboptimal outcomes, limiting the programs’ overall impact on agricultural value chain development. Without addressing these gaps, the potential for transforming the agricultural sector in Ilorin East remains unfulfilled. This study seeks to critically examine the extent to which adult literacy programs have succeeded in fostering agricultural value chain development and to identify the barriers that continue to hinder progress. The analysis will focus on curriculum content, delivery methods, and the socio-economic environment that shapes farmer engagement. By understanding these challenges, the study aims to provide recommendations for refining the educational framework to better support the agricultural community (Oduro, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

• To evaluate the role of adult literacy programs in enhancing agricultural value chain knowledge among farmers.

• To identify the challenges in integrating modern agricultural practices within adult literacy curricula.

• To propose strategies for improving the linkage between literacy education and value chain development.

Research Questions

• How do adult literacy programs contribute to agricultural value chain development in Ilorin East?

• What challenges do farmers face in integrating modern agricultural practices through these programs?

• What strategies can be adopted to improve the effectiveness of these programs in enhancing the agricultural value chain?

Research Hypotheses

• Adult literacy programs significantly improve the understanding of agricultural value chain processes among farmers.

• Enhanced literacy leads to better adoption of modern agricultural practices.

• Curriculum modifications that integrate practical agricultural modules positively affect value chain development.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it provides insights into the impact of adult literacy programs on agricultural value chain development in Ilorin East. By critically assessing the effectiveness of these programs and identifying the challenges, the research aims to offer strategic recommendations to enhance curriculum relevance and program delivery. The outcomes are expected to contribute to improved agricultural productivity and economic growth in the region (Martinez, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study is limited to the appraisal of adult literacy programs aimed at fostering agricultural value chain development in Ilorin East Local Government Area, Kwara State. It does not extend to other regions or agricultural sectors.
